Zep Rehabilitation Centre

Introduction

Zep is a rehabilitation center for special children with challenges like autism, mental retardation, learning disabilities, ADHD, cerebral palsy, etc. Zep aims at improving the quality of life of these children and give their families a feeling of hope and security. Established in 2008, Zep is the only rehabilitation center in Pimpri-Chinchwad city for special children. It has 42 children enrolled at present with over 50 children on waiting list (due to space crunch, Zep cannot accommodate more than 42 children at present.) Zep runs specially designed training and rehabilitation programs aimed at the development of daily living skills, self-help, functional independence, socio-cultural enrichment  and academic progress.

Mrs Netra Patkar established Zep as a courageous response to her own experience of raising a child (named Preyas) with cerebral palsy. To face the difficult challenge of cerebral palsy in her own child was a big shock for Mrs Netra. But instead of wallowing in self-pity, she got herself trained as a Special Educator at NIMH (National Institute of Mentally Handicapped), Pune. She took actual work experience by working as a special educator at Ankur Vidya Mandir, FC Road and Dr Priya Bhide's clinic, JM Road, Pune. And in 2008, she took the great leap of establishing 'Zep' (which literally means a great leap) !

Activities

    1. Zep admits special children who are not easily accepted in normal schools.
    2. Affording parents are charged a reasonable fee; but children from needy families are admitted and rehabilitated with the help of donations from well-wishers.
    3. Specific needs of every individual child are identified (diagnosed) as the first step and a program of training and rehabilitation is designed for each.
    4. Multi-sensory approach : Training and therapy is imparted to each child with a multi-sensory stimulation approach involving visual, auditory, tactile, vestibular and proprioceptive senses. Suitable instruments are used to impart such therapeutic training.
    5. Speech therapy is started as early as possible and in a soundproof room to minimize distractions.
    6. Physiotherapy : This helps to achieve gross & fine motor skill development and sensory integration. Devices like walker, axillary crutches, elbow crutches, etc are used. Attempt is made to strengthen and stretch specific groups of muscles.
    7. Occupational therapy :To assist in daily living skills, training is imparted using devices e.g.  for writing ease, devices like gripper, handle and cuff are used.
    8. Training in Yoga, Dance and Music.
    9. A support group of parents of special children.
    10. Zep arranges training workshops and counseling sessions for parents / guardians of children with special challenges.
    11. Zep also conducts cultural events (e.g. annual gathering) and short tours for special children. To take special children for trips is an activity which involves big risk and responsibility. But the joy on the faces of the children makes it worth more than the price of the stress involved.

    Dreams for the Future

    1. Early diagnosis and intervention center for special children.
    2. Vocational training and long term rehabilitation center.
    3. Expansion of space to accommodate more children with special needs.

How You Can Contribute

Imagine a child who needs to be locked in a room to protect it from its own destructive behavior. A child who cannot speak coherently,  cannot make eye-contact with anyone, is completely withdrawn, unable to do the simplest things like brushing of teeth or swallowing one's own saliva, a child that is a cause of tremendous worry and sorrow for its helpless parents.

And then imagine such a child getting  acceptance, affection, care, respect, therapy and training from a team of dedicated and compassionate therapists and teachers and slowly but surely becoming empowered to live a life of independence, dignity and team spirit. Nothing short of a wonderful miracle! Wouldn't you be happy to contribute to this little miracle?
