'Apala Ghar' which literally means 'Our Own Home' provides a homely shelter to around 40 orphans, mostly coming from the under-privileged strata of the society. The children are housed at two locations near Pune City, viz., Warje and Donje.
The children are provided with nutritious food, comfortable staying arrangements, clothing, health-care and hygienic surroundings. Children at Apala Ghar attend regular schools affiliated to Maharashtra State Boards of Secondary and Higher Secondary education. Apala Ghar also trains the children in various vocations like stitching, painting, handicraft, carpentry, electric wiring, etc. Various sociocultural activities organized by Apala Ghar inculcate good values in children.
2. Old Age Home at Donje
Baba and Sadhanatai Amte had set up the orphanage called 'Gokul' and old age home called 'Uttarayan' next to each other in Anandwan.
Vijay and Sadhana Phalnikar have emulated this example by establishing an old age home in the same premises as the orphanage at Donje. Destitute elders from under-privileged strata of the society are taken care of here. Ten such "grand-parents" housed at Donje enjoy the affection of their 'grand-children' along with food, clothing, shelter and medical care. These elders forget their age when they also enthusiastically participate in the many sociocultural activities organized by Apala Ghar.
3. Vocational Training Center
This is a novel, empowering employment generating concept. Very short courses (some with a duration of only 15 days) are arranged in various skills and crafts like stitching and embroidery work, hand-made paper carry bags, file making, 'dhoop' making, herbal disinfectant making, book binding, disposable container making, screen printing, etc. Not only are these short training courses offered totally free of cost to below-poverty-line trainees, the trainees are also given free accommodation and food during their training course! So far, more than 500 trainees have benefited from these courses and many of them have started their own income generating ventures!
4. Kausalya Karad Rural Hospital
The hospital has also been supplemented with a Mobile Medicare Unit to enable its services to reach more remote areas. Equipped with battery operated ECG machine, solar-powered refrigerator and fan, portable O2 cylinders and other necessary medical material, the mobile medicare unit takes health care to the doorstep of at least 100 patients everyday.
5. Rendering awards to other organizations and individuals
On its anniversary day in November every year, Apala Ghar honours other organizations and individuals involved in good social work with awards. For an orphanage, this is a most generous and dignified way to celebrate its own foundation day!
